Waterbury, CT — A Waterbury man is facing a murder charge after allegedly stabbing his partner to death in their home Tuesday, March 11, as their teenage daughter tried to intervene, according to police.
Authorities identified the victim as 39-year-old Yomayra Vargas-Martinez and the suspect as 39-year-old Julio Araud-Figueroa. The couple shared an apartment on Lounsbury Street, where the fatal dispute unfolded.
Police said the argument turned violent when Araud-Figueroa repeatedly stabbed Vargas-Martinez. Their 19-year-old daughter attempted to break up the altercation but was unable to stop the attack.
After sustaining multiple stab wounds, Vargas-Martinez fled the apartment and sought help at a mini-mart across the street. Officers responded at 12:11 p.m. and found her gravely injured. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Police located Araud-Figueroa inside the apartment and took him into custody without incident. He has been charged with murder and is being held on a $3 million bond. His arraignment is set for Wednesday.
Authorities confirmed that the couple’s daughter was not physically harmed during the incident.
