Prime Video’s latest series, “My Lady Jane,” offers a vibrant and imaginative retelling of the tragic story of Lady Jane Grey, England’s Nine Days’ Queen. This eight-part series, which premiered on June 27, 2024, diverges significantly from historical accuracy, instead embracing a whimsical and fantastical narrative.

“My Lady Jane” is based on the novel by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. The show reimagines the life of Lady Jane Grey, portraying her not as a tragic figure but as a resilient and adventurous heroine. The series begins with Jane being unexpectedly crowned queen after King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not succumb to tuberculosis. Instead of facing execution, Jane and her husband, Guildford Dudley, navigate a court filled with intrigue and supernatural elements.

The series stars Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey, Edward Bluemel as Guildford Dudley, and Jordan Peters as King Edward. Other notable cast members include Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon, and Jim Broadbent. The showrunners Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn, along with director Jamie Babbit, drew inspiration from popular series and films like “Bridgerton” and “The Princess Bride,” aiming to blend romance, comedy, and fantasy.

“My Lady Jane” combines historical characters with a modern twist, adding elements such as shape-shifters and magical realism to the Tudor-era setting. The show’s plot centers on Jane’s unexpected ascension to the throne and the subsequent conspiracies to overthrow her. This narrative deviation allows for a more empowering portrayal of Jane, who in this version, takes charge of her destiny and fights to protect her loved ones and her kingdom.

The series has received praise for its unique approach, blending humor with heartfelt moments. Emily Bader’s portrayal of Jane highlights a “dumbest smart person” character, who navigates the challenges of her new role with wit and courage. Edward Bluemel’s Guildford Dudley offers a complementary performance, as their relationship evolves from adversaries to allies and eventually, lovers.

Prime Video subscribers can watch all eight episodes of “My Lady Jane,” available for streaming. For those not subscribed, Amazon Prime membership costs $14.99 per month or $139 annually, with various discounted plans available for students and recipients of select government assistance programs.
