STORRS, CT — Storrs woman remains found in Japan have been confirmed to belong to missing hiker Patricia Wu-Murad, who vanished while hiking in 2023. The confirmation by Japanese authorities marks a tragic conclusion to a two-year international search effort that drew widespread attention across Connecticut and beyond.
Wu-Murad, 61, disappeared on April 10, 2023, while trekking the Kumano Kodo trail in Japan’s Nara Prefecture. She was last seen checking out of the Mandokoro guesthouse that morning. Despite an initial 72-hour search, no evidence of her whereabouts emerged, prompting her family to launch a prolonged international search campaign.
In September 2024, a fisherman discovered her backpack and a hiking shoe near a remote stream, miles off the original trail. Although Japanese police investigated the new area, further clues remained elusive.
On April 27, 2025, a U.S. search volunteer found human remains—including a femur bone—near the site of the prior discovery. DNA analysis later confirmed the remains as belonging to Wu-Murad. Her family was formally notified on May 9.
“Although we had tried to prepare ourselves for this outcome, the finality of this news is heartbreaking,” the Wu-Murad family shared in a statement. “It offers a measure of closure, but many questions remain unanswered.”
Wu-Murad was remembered as a spirited traveler and mother whose disappearance sparked global support and raised over $200,000 to aid search efforts. The family is now working with authorities to repatriate her remains and plans to hold a memorial service in Connecticut.
