Manhunt: Arkansas Prison Escape by Ex-Police Chief

CALICO ROCK, AR — A massive manhunt is underway after an Arkansas prison escape involving Grant Hardin, a former police chief labeled “extremely dangerous,” who broke out of the North Central Unit in Calico Rock on Sunday afternoon. Hardin, 56, was serving an 80-year sentence for the 2017 murder of James Appleton and a 1997 rape conviction.

According to the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Hardin’s Arkansas prison escape occurred around 3:40 p.m. when he disguised himself in a fake law enforcement uniform and pushed a utility cart through a secured entrance. Surveillance footage confirmed the elaborate disguise, and all official equipment remains accounted for, pointing to a self-made outfit.

Standing 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 259 pounds, Hardin is considered “extremely dangerous,” and law enforcement agencies have closed roads across Izard and Stone Counties while deploying drones and roadblocks. Authorities believe he may attempt to steal a vehicle or take a hostage.

Hardin’s criminal background includes a dismissed 2007 domestic battery charge and prior disciplinary issues from his time in law enforcement. While in prison, he completed anger management courses and food safety training, yet remained under strict supervision due to the violent nature of his crimes.

Authorities urge the public: do not approach Hardin. Anyone with information or sightings is asked to immediately call 911 or notify local law enforcement.
