A tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, Georgia, on Wednesday morning has left four people dead and nine others injured. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) confirmed that the deceased include two teachers and two students. The suspect, identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, is a student at the high school and is currently in custody.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10:20 a.m. on September 4, 2024, when the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office began receiving multiple calls reporting an active shooter at Apalachee High School. Law enforcement responded swiftly to the scene, and officers engaged the suspected shooter within minutes. According to Sheriff Jud Smith, the suspect immediately surrendered, dropping his weapon upon realizing that continuing to engage would likely result in an officer-involved shooting (OIS).

GBI has responded to a shooting @ Apalachee H.S. in Barrow Co. We have agents on site assisting local, state, & federal law enforcement w/ the investigation. One suspect in custody. We urge anyone near the area to stay clear while authorities investigate. More info to follow.

At this time, the GBI has not released the names of the victims, and the investigation is ongoing. The authorities have emphasized their commitment to gathering all relevant facts and ensuring the accuracy of the information released to the public. They are currently conducting numerous interviews and collecting evidence to understand the full scope of the tragedy.

Sheriff Jud Smith stated during a press conference that there appears to be no known connection between the suspect, Colt Gray, and the victims at this point in the investigation. “We’re looking into all aspects surrounding the incident,” Smith noted, highlighting the complex nature of such investigations and the need to explore every possible lead. The community has been left reeling by the sudden violence, and the priority for law enforcement is to provide clarity and support to those affected.

The shooting resulted in the deaths of two teachers and two students, with nine other individuals sustaining injuries. The school, which has approximately 1,900 students enrolled, is a significant institution within the Barrow County Public Schools district, located about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta. The immediate response from law enforcement helped to contain the situation quickly, and by 11:30 a.m., the school was cleared, and students were released to their families. As a precautionary measure, nearby Winder-Barrow High School was also placed on lockdown briefly, although no threat was found at that location.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Apalachee High School has announced that it will be closed for the remainder of the week as the community grapples with the tragic loss of life and seeks to support the victims’ families. Support services, including counseling and prayer services, have been organized to help the school community cope with the trauma of the event.

The federal government is also closely monitoring the situation. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting by Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, according to a statement from the White House. The President’s administration is reportedly coordinating with federal, state, and local officials to ensure a comprehensive response to the incident. Additionally, Vice President Kamala Harris was briefed on the tragic shooting prior to her departure from Joint Base Andrews and is expected to address the event in her remarks during a scheduled campaign stop in New Hampshire later today.

I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state. (1/2)

— Governor Brian P. Kemp (@GovKemp) September 4, 2024

Law enforcement agencies, including the GBI and FBI, are working together on the investigation. Local news outlets are expected to livestream future press conferences, allowing the community and interested parties to stay informed as new details emerge.

The community of Barrow County is in mourning, and local authorities have extended their condolences to the families and individuals affected by the school shooting. The GBI has expressed its commitment to conducting a thorough investigation and bringing any necessary charges as the investigation progresses. As the situation develops, additional updates will be provided to the public to ensure transparency and support for the grieving community.
