A Mega Millions ticket sold in California has claimed the staggering $1.22 billion jackpot, marking the end of a three-month streak without a top prize winner. The winning numbers were drawn Friday night, bringing a wave of excitement to the small town of Cottonwood.

The winning ticket was purchased at Circle K (Sunshine Food and Gas) on Rhonda Road in Cottonwood, a rural town located about 150 miles north of Sacramento. The lucky numbers were 3, 7, 37, 49, 55, with the gold Mega Ball 6. Ishar Gill, the son of the store owner, expressed his joy over the win, calling it “a blessing” for the community of approximately 6,000 residents. The identity of the winner remains unknown, as no one has come forward to claim the prize yet.

The jackpot, if taken as an annuity, would be paid out over 29 years. However, most winners opt for the lump sum cash option, which for this drawing is estimated at $549.7 million. Despite the daunting odds of 1 in 302.6 million, ticket sales surged as the jackpot grew, with the last Mega Millions jackpot win occurring on September 10.

This win follows the record-breaking $1.6 billion Mega Millions jackpot sold in Florida in August 2023. Mega Millions, along with Powerball, is available in 45 states, Washington D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, with Powerball also sold in Puerto Rico.

In April, Mega Millions ticket prices are set to increase from $2 to $5. Officials state that this change will enhance jackpot odds, leading to more frequent large prizes and even bigger payouts.

As the winner or winners of the $1.22 billion jackpot await to be revealed, the small town of Cottonwood basks in the excitement of this life-changing event. With upcoming changes to the Mega Millions game, the anticipation for future jackpots continues to build.
