As winter weather conditions intensify, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT) is urging drivers to exercise caution around snowplows and prioritize safe driving practices.

With the arrival of winter, Connecticut roads are increasingly covered with snow and ice, making driving conditions hazardous. The CT DOT has issued a reminder to all motorists to maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other road maintenance vehicles. Snowplows often travel at slower speeds and make frequent stops, which can be unpredictable for drivers who are not paying close attention

According to the CT DOT, snowplows are equipped with large blades that can extend several feet beyond the width of the vehicle, posing a risk to cars that attempt to pass them.

“It’s crucial for drivers to stay back and give snowplows the room they need to clear the roads effectively.”

said a CT DOT spokesperson.

“Patience and caution can prevent accidents and ensure everyone’s safety.”

In addition to keeping a safe distance from snowplows, the CT DOT advises drivers to reduce speed, increase following distances, and ensure their vehicles are equipped with winter tires. These precautions are essential for navigating icy roads and avoiding collisions.

The CT DOT also emphasizes the importance of staying informed about weather conditions and road closures. Motorists are encouraged to check the CT DOT website or local news outlets for updates before heading out.

As Connecticut braces for more winter weather, the CT DOT’s message is clear: safety first. By respecting snowplows and adopting safe driving habits, drivers can help keep themselves and others safe on the roads. For more tips on winter driving safety, visit the CT DOT website.
