Bill Cobbs, Beloved Veteran Actor, Dies at 90

Bill Cobbs, the acclaimed actor known for his extensive work in film and television, passed away on June 25, 2024, at his home in Riverside, California. He was 90 years old.

Cobbs, born Wilbert Cobbs on June 16, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, had a distinguished career spanning over five decades. His death marks the end of a prolific journey that saw him contribute significantly to the entertainment industry through more than 120 movies and numerous television roles​​​​​​.

Cobbs’ acting career began in his late 30s, following diverse experiences that included serving in the U.S. Air Force and working for IBM. He made his film debut in 1974 with “The Taking of Pelham One Two Three” and quickly became a familiar face on both the big and small screens. His performances in movies like “Night at the Museum,” “The Bodyguard,” and “Oz the Great and Powerful” are fondly remembered by audiences worldwide​​​​.

On television, Cobbs appeared in popular series such as “The Sopranos,” “Six Feet Under,” and “The Muppets.” His versatility allowed him to portray a wide range of characters, earning him respect and admiration in Hollywood and beyond​​​​.

In addition to his screen work, Cobbs was active in theater, starting his acting journey at the Karamu House in Cleveland. He starred in various plays, including Ossie Davis’s “Purlie Victorious,” which showcased his dramatic talent and set the stage for his future success in film and television​​.

Cobbs’ contributions to the arts were not limited to his performances. He was involved in educational initiatives, such as recording public service announcements for the Hip-Hop Literacy campaign, encouraging reading and literacy among young people​​.

Cobbs lived a full and active life, continuing to act well into his later years. His last notable roles included parts in “Saving Paradise” (2021) and “Block Party” (2022), demonstrating his enduring passion for acting​​.

The actor’s passing has been met with tributes from colleagues and fans alike, who remember him not only for his work but also for his kindness and professionalism. His legacy will live on through the countless performances that have touched the hearts of many.

Cobbs is survived by his extended family and a wide circle of friends and admirers. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
