BRISTOL, CT — The cities of Bristol and Meriden are glowing purple this week in memory of Madison “Birdie” Barbieri, an 8-year-old girl whose life left a lasting imprint on her community and far beyond.
Birdie passed away on Sunday, following her lifelong battle with neonatal Marfan syndrome, a rare and severe genetic disorder. Her family said purple was her favorite color — and now it shines from buildings, homes, and streets in tribute.
“The support and love that’s been showing is just overwhelming,” said her father, Jim Barbieri. “It’s truly overwhelming to see how many people have come together to support her and us.”
Birdie’s mother, Sharon Barbieri, stood outside the family’s home in Bristol and reflected on the tribute.
“I know she would love it,” she said. “She loved everybody just as much.”
Birdie leaves behind her parents, an older brother, and a twin brother — as well as a legacy that stretches far beyond Connecticut. “She’s known and has reached people across the world, which is mind blowing,” Sharon said.
A public funeral service for Birdie is scheduled for 2 p.m. on May 3 at the Wallingford Funeral Home. Her family is encouraging all attendees to wear purple in her memory.
