Houston is experiencing a challenging weather pattern in June 2024, with alternating bouts of severe thunderstorms and extreme heat. The latest forecasts indicate a high-pressure ridge building over the area, bringing temperatures soaring into the mid-90s through the weekend.

The KHOU 11 Weather Team has reported a series of strong thunderstorms that swept through the region recently, bringing gusty winds and large hail. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for Brazoria, Galveston, Chambers, and Matagorda counties until 6 p.m. on June 11. The storms have increased the severe weather threat level for Houston to Level 3, indicating numerous persistent and widespread intense storms.

In addition to the storms, Houston is also grappling with hazy skies caused by smoke from fires in Mexico. This smoke has resulted in decreased air quality, falling into the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category. Residents with respiratory issues, such as asthma, are advised to take precautions.

Despite the storms, the upcoming weekend is expected to remain dry but very hot, with temperatures remaining in the mid-90s. The high-pressure ridge is likely to keep rain at bay, contributing to the scorching conditions.

The city of Houston has opened several cooling centers to help residents cope with the extreme heat. These centers provide a respite for those without access to air conditioning and are crucial for preventing heat-related illnesses. Stay safe and keep cool !
