Cromwell, CT – A dog struck by a vehicle on Route 9 near the I-91 interchange found unexpected allies late night of Wednesday, Feb. 26, as state troopers and passersby worked together to pull the injured animal from danger.
According to the Connecticut State Police, troopers from Troop H responded to calls about the wounded dog just after dusk on Feb. 26, finding it dazed but alive on the roadside.
A handful of drivers had already slowed, some stepping out to shield the animal from oncoming traffic. With temperatures dropping, troopers carefully lifted the dog into a patrol cruiser to keep it warm while waiting for animal control.
Cromwell Animal Control soon arrived, transporting the dog to Pieper Memorial Veterinary Center. Meanwhile, a frantic search was already underway.
The owner, unaware of the accident, had been calling area departments, reporting a missing pet that had slipped through a gap in a nearby fence.
The puzzle pieces fit quickly. By the time authorities connected the dots, the dog was receiving treatment—battered, but astonishingly, with no broken bones.
Veterinarians say the dog is expected to make a full recovery. The owner, reunited with their runaway companion, expressed relief at the kindness of strangers.
The driver involved did not remain at the scene, but no criminal charges are expected. Authorities remind pet owners to secure fences and keep a close eye on animals near busy roadways.
