Legendary actor James Earl Jones, whose booming voice brought to life some of cinema’s most iconic characters like Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King, has passed away at the age of 93. Jones died on Monday, September 9, 2024, at his home in Dutchess County, New York, as confirmed by his agent to PEOPLE. His passing marks the end of an era, as fans and Hollywood figures alike mourn the loss of a true cinematic giant.

Jones’ death quickly made headlines, with celebrities and fellow actors taking to social media to share their grief and pay tribute to his legacy. Mark Hamill, who famously portrayed Luke Skywalker alongside Jones’ voice work as Darth Vader, expressed his sorrow with a simple, heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter). Hamill, 72, posted a broken heart emoji followed by the words, “#RIP dad ,” referencing the legendary moment in The Empire Strikes Back when Darth Vader reveals himself as Skywalker’s father with the unforgettable line, “I am your father.”

Known for his deep, resonant voice, James Earl Jones became synonymous with gravitas and power in Hollywood, leaving an indelible mark on not only the Star Wars franchise but also a wide range of other films, television shows, and stage performances. His career, which spanned nearly seven decades, included more than 200 film and television credits, making him one of the most prolific and respected actors of his generation.

Rob Minkoff, the co-director of The Lion King, also shared his thoughts on the actor’s passing, calling Jones’ portrayal of Mufasa “perfection” and stating that the actor’s work will never be forgotten. In the Disney animated classic, Jones’ voice as Mufasa became a symbol of wisdom and strength, resonating deeply with audiences of all ages.

Jones’ legacy was further underscored by the words of Disney CEO Bob Iger, who emphasized the breadth of Jones’ contributions to cinema.

“from the gentle wisdom of Mufasa to the menacing threat of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones gave voice to some of the greatest characters in cinema history.”

Iger went on to highlight Jones’ uniquely commanding presence, which “left an indelible mark on generations of audiences.”

Jones’ co-stars from other projects also shared their memories. Kevin Costner, who worked with Jones in Field of Dreams, posted on Instagram, “That booming voice. That quiet strength. The kindness that he radiated. So much can be said about his legacy, so I’ll just say how thankful I am that part of it includes Field of Dreams.” LeVar Burton, who starred alongside Jones in Roots: The Next Generations, wrote on X that “there will never be another of his particular combination of graces.”

Jones’ impact extended beyond the screen, with his powerful voice lending weight to public service announcements, documentaries, and stage performances. He was a celebrated stage actor, earning accolades for his work in Broadway productions like Fences and Othello. His contributions to the arts earned him multiple prestigious awards, including an Honorary Academy Award, three Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award. In 2011, he was presented with an honorary Oscar for his extensive body of work and lasting influence on American theater and film.

Despite his retirement from voicing Darth Vader in 2022, Jones left a lasting legacy within the Star Wars universe. He gave Disney permission to digitally recreate his iconic voice for future installments, ensuring that his presence as one of cinema’s greatest villains would endure for generations to come. His voice work in Star Wars was groundbreaking, elevating the character of Darth Vader into one of the most feared and revered figures in film history. Jones’ ability to convey both menace and nuance with his voice alone remains unparalleled in the industry.

James Earl Jones’ passing leaves a tremendous void in the world of film and theater. He was not only a master of his craft but also a beloved figure who inspired countless actors and filmmakers. His legacy, both as Darth Vader and Mufasa, as well as through his other memorable roles, will continue to resonate with audiences for years to come.

As Hollywood reflects on the life and career of James Earl Jones, the tributes pouring in serve as a testament to his unmatched contributions to cinema and the lasting impact he made on the world. He will be remembered not only for his iconic roles but also for the powerful way he brought stories to life with his unforgettable voice. Jones’ death marks the end of a legendary era, but his work will live on, cherished by fans across the globe.
