Starz’s ‘Down in the Valley’ Premieres July 5, 2024

Starz is set to premiere its new docuseries “Down in the Valley” on July 5, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Hosted by Nicco Annan, best known for his role as Uncle Clifford on “P-Valley,” the six-episode series delves into the unique and vibrant subcultures of the Deep South. The series promises an intimate look at the region’s sensuality, music, culture, and the lives of Black people and marginalized communities.

“Down in the Valley” follows Annan as he travels through the South, uncovering stories and experiences often hidden from mainstream media. From strip clubs and sex workshops to rap performances and ancient hoodoo rituals, the series offers a broad spectrum of Southern life. According to Starz, the show “explores sensuality, music, culture, and stories of the South from the lens of Black people and marginalized groups.”

Annan’s journey includes a visit to the Diamonds of Memphis strip club, an interview with Bandana Fresh, a gay rapper based in Dallas, and adventures like ATV and horse riding at Smith Family Farms in Mississippi. Through these experiences, Annan aims to highlight the complex and multifaceted nature of Southern culture.

Nicco Annan, celebrated for his portrayal of Uncle Clifford, brings his charisma and depth to “Down in the Valley,” providing viewers with an engaging and educational exploration of Southern subcultures. The series is directed by Haimy Assefa and Patrick Altema, with Nicco Annan and Katori Hall serving as executive producers.

Fans of “P-Valley” and those interested in the cultural dynamics of the South will find “Down in the Valley” a must-watch. The docuseries not only celebrates the richness of Southern traditions but also sheds light on the lives of those who embrace and preserve these customs.
