Severe weather has wreaked havoc across north-west England, leaving residents trapped, homes evacuated, and transport networks disrupted. Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident as heavy torrential rain and floods hit Stockport, Bolton, Didsbury, and other areas, with significant impacts in Lancashire and Cheshire.

The relentless downpour led to widespread flooding, prompting evacuations in parts of Manchester. Residents were advised to stay updated through local councils and emergency services. In Cheshire, the collapse of an aqueduct at the Bridgewater Canal resulted in water inundating nearby fields, leading to property evacuations and the closure of the M56 westbound between junctions 6 and 7.

In Stockport, Helen Beau, a resident of Meadow Mill, found herself trapped in a flat without running water or electricity. The converted mill’s car park was submerged, leaving vehicles damaged.

In Cheshire, Gabrielle Dainty expressed frustration as her cottage flooded for the second time in four years, despite local flood defenses. Meanwhile, in Ribchester, Lancashire, landlord Sam Hubbard managed to save her pub from flooding, but her home suffered water damage.

The Met Office issued an amber warning for rain in Lancashire and Greater Manchester, with a yellow warning for parts of Merseyside and Cheshire. The River Mersey reached record levels, exacerbating the flooding situation.

In Ormskirk, West Lancashire, homes were flooded, and residents shared images of waterlogged kitchens and gardens. Emergency services conducted rescues in Warrington and Lymm, using rafts to reach stranded vehicles.

Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig assured residents that water levels were being monitored and support was being provided.

Transport networks faced severe disruptions, with train cancellations between Manchester and Liverpool, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York. TransPennine Express advised against travel due to significant flooding issues. Road closures included the M57 and M56, affecting major routes.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of the floods, communities are rallying together to support those affected. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow guidance from local authorities as efforts continue to manage the situation and restore normalcy.
