The annual event took place on June 21 at the Sonoma Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, drawing contestants and spectators from across the country.
Wild Thang’s journey to the title is as unique as his appearance. Born in Los Angeles, he faced significant health challenges early on, including contracting distemper, a potentially fatal viral disease. Although the disease left him with malformed teeth and a constantly paddling right leg, Wild Thang’s resilient spirit shone through, eventually earning him the top spot on his fifth attempt at the title.
The contest, which offers a total prize pool of $10,000 sponsored by Mug Root Beer, aims to promote the adoption of all dogs, regardless of their physical attributes. Wild Thang secured a $5,000 cash prize and the opportunity to be featured on a limited-edition can of Mug Root Beer. This exposure is expected to amplify his advocacy efforts for pet health and welfare, particularly in promoting pet vaccination and supporting rescue efforts.
Wild Thang’s owner has leveraged his Instagram presence to raise awareness and funds for various causes, including supporting Pekingese dogs affected by the conflict in Ukraine. These efforts have led to the successful adoption of seven dogs by families in Canada and the United States.
The second-place title and a $3,000 prize went to Rome, a pug with his own set of endearing quirks, while Daisy Mae secured the third spot with a $2,000 prize. The event, now in its 35th year, continues to challenge perceptions of canine beauty while advocating for animal welfare and adoption.
Supporters of the contest argue that it celebrates rescue dogs and promotes the adoption of animals that might otherwise be overlooked. However, some animal welfare advocates have raised concerns that the event might encourage breeding practices prioritizing unusual features over animal health.
