Andover, CT – The Norton Children’s Fund Commission is now accepting applications for the Chester D. Norton Scholarship, a longstanding financial award dedicated to Andover’s graduating high school seniors.

The scholarship is valued at $1,000, and is open for submissions until Thursday, May 1.

According to the local government, applicants must be Andover residents and high school seniors planning to attend an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or technical school.

Financial need is not a mandatory criterion, though applicants facing economic hardship are encouraged to explore additional assistance programs through the Norton Commission.

Legacy of a generous farmer

The scholarship stems from the will of Chester D. Norton, a local farmer who passed away on October 14, 1891.

Norton’s bequest of $3,000 to the town has funded various initiatives supporting Andover’s youth for over 125 years.

According to town history, Norton’s family once struggled to afford his childhood eyeglasses, and an anonymous benefactor stepped in to help. That early kindness inspired Norton to secure that Andover’s less fortunate children would always have access to assistance.

Through careful financial stewardship, the Norton Children’s Fund Commission has sustained the mission of Norton’s endowment. The scholarship is one of several initiatives financed by the interest generated from the original funds and supplemented by community donations.

The commission also funds back-to-school supplies, holiday gift programs, and other critical support for local families in need.

Each year, at least one student receives the Chester D. Norton Scholarship, reinforcing the town’s investment in education.

The town states that the town remains a symbol of community solidarity, enabling promising students to take the next step in their academic journeys without added financial burden.
