Farmington, CT — Shoppers at Westfarms Mall witnessed an unusual interruption Friday, April 12, when a black bear climbed a tree near the Macy’s entrance, prompting a swift response from local police and wildlife officials.

The incident occurred on the Farmington–West Hartford line around midday.

Authorities quickly cordoned off the entrance as the bear perched in the tree for roughly 30 minutes.

Traffic was rerouted, and mallgoers were kept at a safe distance during the animal’s elevated pause.

Eventually, the bear descended on its own.

Police and officers from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) pursued the animal on foot through the mall parking lot.

The bear escaped without incident, retreating into nearby woodland, according to a spokesperson for Westfarms.

There were no injuries or property damage reported, and the bear did not enter the mall building.

The Connecticut DEEP continues to monitor bear activity across the state and encourages residents to report sightings using their official online form. The agency collects the data to support research and wildlife management efforts.

In emergencies involving wild animals, the public is urged to contact DEEP EnCon dispatch.

Bear encounters have become more common in Connecticut in recent years, particularly during the spring and summer months when food becomes more abundant.

Residents are reminded not to approach bears and to secure outdoor garbage, bird feeders, and other attractants.
