York Regional Police have confirmed that the body of Yuk-Ying (Anita) Mui, a 56-year-old Markham woman who went missing earlier this month, has been found in Parry Sound. The grim discovery was made on August 12, 2024, three days after Mui was reported missing by her family.
Mui, a prominent real estate broker in the Toronto area, was last heard from around 11 a.m. on August 9, 2024. According to her colleague and friend, Stephen Chow, Mui left her home near Baycliffe Road and Warden Avenue in Markham around 9:30 a.m. that day, following her usual routine of leaving for work. However, she never made it to her destination.
Later that afternoon, York Regional Police located her vehicle, a white 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE450 SUV, abandoned in a parking lot near Finch Avenue East and Warden Avenue in Scarborough. Despite this lead, Mui remained missing until OPP officers discovered her burned remains near Avro Arrow Road and Highway 400 in McDougall Township, Parry Sound.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities arrested three male youths—a 17-year-old from Whitby, a 17-year-old from Toronto, and a 16-year-old from Toronto—in connection with Mui’s case. Although these youths have been charged with weapons and fraud offenses, no one has yet been charged in relation to Mui’s death. The youths face multiple charges, including two counts of possession of property obtained by crime. During the investigation, it was revealed that the suspects were in possession of items belonging to Mui.
Police believe that this was a targeted incident. Investigators are currently searching for a “vehicle of interest” connected to the case—a white 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cargo van. They suspect that Mui may have been transported in this vehicle. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information regarding sightings or footage of this vehicle, particularly in the area of 3821 Vandorf Sideroad in Whitchurch-Stouffville or in Parry Sound between August 9 and August 12, 2024.
Earlier in the investigation, York Regional Police conducted an extensive search of a rural property on Vandorf Sideroad, a location where Mui was reportedly scheduled to attend on the day she disappeared. The search involved multiple units, including search dogs, air support, and forensic teams. However, it remains unclear whether Mui ever reached the property.
Mui’s death has shocked the local community, particularly those within the real estate and Chinese-Canadian business circles, where she was a well-known and respected figure. As the president of Century 21 Atria Realty Inc., Mui was recognized as one of the top 10 Century 21 realtors in Canada and was consistently ranked in the top one percent at her firm. She was also actively involved in community service, having served as the president of the Toronto Paragon Lions Club in 2017.
York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween and the homicide investigation team are scheduled to hold a media briefing at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at the York police headquarters in Aurora to provide further updates on the case.
The investigation into Mui’s death remains ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the York Regional Police Homicide Unit at 1-866-876-5423 ext. 7865.
This case is being closely monitored by both law enforcement and the public, as investigators work to uncover the circumstances surrounding Mui’s death and bring those responsible to justice.
