Netflix has finally released the much-anticipated sixth and final season of Cobra Kai, starting with the first five episodes today. The series, which began on YouTube Red before gaining massive popularity on Netflix, continues to explore the lives and rivalries of characters from the original Karate Kid films, focusing on Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso.

This season is divided into three parts, with Part 1 premiering on July 18, 2024. The second part will be available on November 28, 2024, and the final episodes will be released sometime in 2025.

Following the events of Season 5, where Daniel and Johnny defeated Terry Silver, the new season begins with a rare peace in the Valley. However, the peace is threatened by the looming presence of John Kreese, who has escaped from prison and is now more dangerous than ever, especially with the potential alliance with Kim Da-Eun, a character eager to uphold her family’s martial arts traditions.

The creators, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg, have promised that this will be the biggest season yet, both in terms of story and character development. They aim to wrap up all character arcs satisfactorily, ensuring that each major character gets their moment in the spotlight. This extended 15-episode format allows for a deeper exploration of the show’s extensive cast and their storylines.

Cobra Kai Season 6 marks a significant change in Netflix’s release strategy. Unlike previous seasons, which were released in a binge format, this final season is spread out over three parts. This approach not only builds anticipation but also allows fans to digest and discuss the events of each part before the next one drops. This method has been compared to release strategies of other streaming services like Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, which have used staggered releases for their major shows.

The final season sees the return of core cast members including Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso), William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence), Xolo Maridueña (Miguel Diaz), Mary Mouser (Samantha LaRusso), and Tanner Buchanan (Robby Keene). Additionally, fans can look forward to appearances from Karate Kid alumni such as Yuji Okumoto, Elisabeth Shue, Sean Kanan, and others.

With Silver out of the picture, Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang are set to make a strong comeback, potentially facing off in the prestigious Sekai Taikai tournament. The dynamics within Cobra Kai are also set to change dramatically with Kreese and Kim Da-Eun’s new partnership, and possibly, the involvement of Mike Barnes, who has a historical claim to the dojo.

As fans dive into the first part of this epic final season, the creators’ commitment to expanding the Karate Kid universe while delivering satisfying conclusions to beloved characters’ arcs is clear. The unique release format ensures that the excitement and discussion around Cobra Kai will continue well into 2025.
