In Connecticut, several organizations are tackling food insecurity by empowering communities with farming knowledge and resources. These initiatives not only provide immediate relief but also promote sustainable practices and self-sufficiency.

Real Food CT: Cultivating Community Giving Gardens

Founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to healthy food, Real Food CT is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit connecting local farms with hunger relief organizations. They establish and manage giving gardens, collect surplus produce from local farms, and train young farmer interns. Their efforts ensure that fresh, locally grown food reaches those in need, fostering a more equitable food system.

Hartford Food System: Advocating for Food Justice

Since 1978, Hartford Food System has been committed to creating a fair and healthy food environment for Hartford’s residents. Their focus is on long-term, sustainable solutions to food system challenges, emphasizing access to nutritious food, advocating for a sustainable food economy, and supporting responsible food policies. They integrate food sovereignty, food justice, and an equitable food economy, aiming to transform the urban community’s relationship with food.

Arethusa Farm: Embracing Education in Litchfield

Established in 1868, Arethusa Farm in Litchfield has gained national acclaim for its high-quality dairy products. The farm is now diversifying its educational opportunities by offering programming focused on “high-end progressive agriculture farming” for students and community members of all ages. This initiative aims to teach practical farming skills and promote agricultural education, benefiting the community by providing hands-on experiences in sustainable farming practices.

Community Health Center’s Greenhouse Project in Middletown

The Community Health Center in Middletown’s North End is constructing a Dutch-style greenhouse to combat food insecurity and educate both youth and adults on the benefits of gardening and healthy diets. The 2,640-square-foot greenhouse will utilize soil-based and hydroponic systems for crop cultivation and will have space dedicated to plant displays and public education. This initiative aims to provide fresh produce to local homes and schools, promote healthy living, and engage the community in therapeutic gardening.

Connecticut Food System Alliance: Fostering Collaboration

Since 2012, the Connecticut Food System Alliance (CFSA) has been working to strengthen food justice and food systems change work in the state. Their mission is to work toward a just, sustainable food system by fostering collaboration and alignment among the state’s food system actors and advocating for food policy and systems change informed by food justice.

Northeast Organic Farming Association: Promoting Organic Practices

The Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA) is a nonprofit organization that promotes healthy food, organic farming practices, and a clean environment. Founded in Connecticut in 1982, NOFA provides educational conferences, workshops, farm tours, and printed materials to educate farmers, gardeners, consumers, and land care professionals about organic farming.

These Connecticut organizations exemplify how community-driven agricultural education can address food insecurity. By teaching farming skills and promoting sustainable practices, they empower individuals and communities to take control of their food sources, leading to healthier lifestyles and more resilient local food systems.
