Meriden, CT – The city will swear in its 21st fire chief in April, marking a milestone in the department’s history.
Cristina Schoeck will replace Chief Ken Morgan, who has led since 2013. Schoeck, a 22-year department veteran, will be the first woman to hold the position.
“About a year ago she became a clear individual that I think would be perfect for taking over this department,” Morgan said. “She’s a smart, dedicated individual. I’m very excited to be turning the department over to her.”
Schoeck’s career began in 2002. She worked her way through the ranks, serving as lieutenant and later as a training and safety officer. She currently holds the title of deputy chief.
“She is the most qualified individual for this position,” Mayor Kevin Scarpati said.
Her appointment breaks another barrier—she was also the first female deputy fire chief. The decision reflects the city’s trust in her leadership and experience.
“It was an unreal moment,” Schoeck said. “It was very exciting, to actually have everything come together. To actually have the opportunity and privilege to become the next fire chief.”
She will lead more than 100 firefighters. She plans to maintain the department’s current direction while strengthening its focus on diversity, technology, and firefighter safety.
“I would love to be able to see the fire department reflect more of the community that we serve,” she said. “When young people in general see people in the community that looks like them then they start to see that ‘I can do that.’”
