The long-awaited sequel to the 2006 blockbuster “The Devil Wears Prada” remains a distant dream for fans, as stars Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway recently confirmed that there have been no serious discussions about a follow-up film. Despite ongoing public interest, both actresses emphasized their reluctance to revisit the iconic roles that defined their careers.

Emily Blunt, who played the ambitious assistant Emily Charlton, expressed her views during a live taping of the Happy Sad Confused podcast at The 92nd Street Y in New York on February 7, 2024. Blunt stated, “Despite public interest in bringing the cast back together, there have never been any concrete discussions about making this happen.” She added, “Sometimes things should be cherished and preserved in this bubble, and it’s OK.” This sentiment reflects her belief that a sequel might dilute the original’s impact.

Anne Hathaway, who starred as the protagonist Andy Sachs, echoed similar sentiments in various interviews. While promoting her recent projects, Hathaway acknowledged the difficulty of recapturing the original film’s magic. She noted that the success of “The Devil Wears Prada” was partly due to the unique circumstances and chemistry among the cast and crew during its production.

Meryl Streep, who delivered an unforgettable performance as the formidable fashion editor Miranda Priestly, has also been ambivalent about the idea of a sequel. Streep famously quipped in 2012, “I’d have to lose the f***ing weight, but I would do that, yeah.” Her humorous yet candid response underscored the challenges associated with revisiting a character that has become iconic in popular culture.

The original film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel of the same name, was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $326 million worldwide. It received several award nominations, including an Academy Award nomination for Streep’s performance. The movie’s enduring popularity has fueled speculation about a sequel for years, but the cast’s recent comments suggest that fans might need to be content with the legacy of the original.

Blunt, Hathaway, and Streep reunited at the 2024 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, providing fans with a nostalgic look back at the film’s impact. During their reunion, Blunt remarked, “We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie. I don’t know if any of us knew it was going to become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week. It will be the movie that changed my life.”

Blunt has been consistent in her views over the years. In a 2018 interview, she mentioned, “I mean if everyone wanted to do it, it would be cool… I’d be down.” However, just weeks later, she clarified, “I almost hope it doesn’t [happen] because I think sometimes when you sequel everything kind of dilutes how special the original is.”

Despite the lack of a sequel, the legacy of “The Devil Wears Prada” continues to thrive. The film remains a cultural touchstone, with fans frequently quoting its memorable lines and referencing its iconic scenes. Its influence on fashion and popular culture is undeniable, and the performances of Blunt, Hathaway, and Streep continue to be celebrated.

For now, fans of “The Devil Wears Prada” can enjoy the nostalgia of the original film and the occasional reunions and reflections from its beloved cast. While a sequel may not be in the cards, the movie’s impact and legacy remain as strong as ever.
