GROTON, CT — Groton man arrested for the murder of his roommate, a development that officials say dispels rampant social media rumors about a serial killer operating in southeastern Connecticut.
Donald Coffel, 68, was charged with the murder of Suzanne Wormser after her remains were found inside a suitcase near Colonel Ledyard Cemetery on March 19. Authorities said Coffel confessed to the crime during his third police interview, held on April 23.
Police had been investigating Wormser’s disappearance since she was reported missing earlier this year. The discovery of her body initially sparked fears and speculation across social media platforms, with some suggesting the presence of an active serial killer in the region.
However, Groton police Chief Louis J. Fusaro Jr. emphasized in a statement that “there is no evidence to suggest a serial killer is responsible” for other local incidents. “This was an isolated case involving known parties,” Fusaro said.
Coffel, who had a previous criminal record including charges related to assault, is being held on a $2 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 6. Officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to Wormser’s death.
Authorities have urged the public to rely on verified information from law enforcement agencies and to avoid spreading unconfirmed reports.
With Coffel’s arrest, police hope to restore a sense of safety and calm in the Groton community. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and to contact authorities if they have any additional information related to the case.
