Police are investigating human remains discovered near Colonel Ledyard Cemetery in Groton. Authorities have not determined if foul play is involved.

GROTON, Conn. – Police are investigating after human remains were discovered near Colonel Ledyard Cemetery on Mitchell Street in Groton.

Officers responded to the area on Wednesday after receiving a 911 call reporting a suspicious item, according to the City of Groton Police Department.

When they arrived, authorities confirmed that human remains had been found.

The City of Groton Police Detective Division is leading the investigation, with assistance from the New London State’s Attorney’s Office, the Eastern District Connecticut State Police Major Crime Unit, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Police have not released any details about the condition of the remains or how long they may have been in the area. It remains unclear if foul play is suspected.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the City of Groton Police Department as the investigation continues.
