MIDDLETOWN, CT — A person was taken into custody outside the Middletown courthouse Tuesday in what city officials have now confirmed was a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation.
The arrest occurred without prior notice to local law enforcement, and city officials are now seeking further information.
According to Middletown Mayor Ben Florsheim, an unmarked black SUV pulled up outside the courthouse.
City employees at the scene saw several individuals step out. Some wore gear labeled “FBI,” while another wore a vest marked “police” and had a black bandanna over his face.
The individual was arrested while waiting outside the building ahead of a scheduled court date.
“The city is working to learn additional details about the arrest,” officials said in a statement.
Middletown police were not alerted beforehand, according to the mayor. City staff who witnessed the event described the operation as sudden.
Officials later confirmed the action was conducted by federal immigration authorities.
The identity of the person taken into custody has not been made public.
No charges have been disclosed, and ICE has not issued a formal statement as of Wednesday morning.
