Joe Bonsall, the renowned tenor vocalist of the legendary country and gospel group The Oak Ridge Boys, has died at the age of 76. Bonsall’s death marks the end of an era for the band, known for its timeless hits and significant contributions to the country music scene.
Bonsall, who joined The Oak Ridge Boys in 1973, was a vital part of the group’s success for over five decades. His distinctive voice and energetic performances helped the band achieve multiple No. 1 hits, including the chart-topping “Elvira” and “Bobbie Sue.” His contributions to the band’s success earned him and his bandmates induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.
In recent years, Bonsall has faced significant health challenges. He announced his retirement from touring earlier this year due to a neuromuscular disorder that had progressively impacted his ability to walk. In a statement released in January 2024, Bonsall expressed his gratitude to fans and his fellow band members for their unwavering support. He noted that the disorder had made touring increasingly difficult, ultimately leading to his decision to step back from performing.
The Oak Ridge Boys shared the news of Bonsall’s passing with a heartfelt message to their fans, thanking them for their prayers and support during Bonsall’s illness. Bonsall’s retirement was officially announced on January 3, 2024. In his statement, he highlighted the joy and fulfillment he experienced during his 50 years with the band. “I am now at a point where walking is impossible, so I have basically retired from the road. It has been a great 50 years, and I am thankful to all the Oak Ridge Boys band crew and staff for the constant love and support shown to me through it all,” he said.
The Oak Ridge Boys continued their “American Made: Farewell Tour” without Bonsall, introducing Ben James as his touring replacement. James, a 27-year-old singer with a background in gospel music, was warmly welcomed by fans and the band alike. Bonsall expressed his support for James, stating, “There is a young man named Ben James singing for me out there, and he needs your love and encouragement. The Oak Ridge Boys will finish the Farewell Tour without me, but rest assured, I am good with all of it! God’s Got It!!!”
Bonsall’s health issues began to escalate in mid-2022 when he suffered a pulmonary embolism, a serious condition involving a blood clot in the lungs. In a tweet dated June 20, 2022, Bonsall shared, “I could have easily died last weekend but God is not through with me yet. I am home now after 6 days in the hospital battling pulmonary embolisms. My recovery could take awhile … thanks for the prayers and love shown!! I am on the better side now … GOD IS ABLE! Love you ALL.”
Despite his health struggles, Bonsall remained active in his faith and music. His final performance with The Oak Ridge Boys took place on December 17, 2023, during a concert in Wheeling, West Virginia. Reflecting on his time with the band, Bonsall said, “It has been a great 50 years, and I will never forget the love and support from everyone.”
