Bridgeport, CT – A pre-dawn fire tore through an old Civil Air Patrol building at Sikorsky Memorial Airport early Friday, Feb. 28, reducing the 1.5-story structure to charred remains.
Firefighters from Bridgeport and Stratford rushed to the scene around 6:30 a.m., finding the structure fully engulfed in flames.
Crews moved swiftly, dousing the fire before it could spread. No injuries were reported, but the extent of the damage left the building beyond salvageable.
Thick smoke billowed across Great Meadow Road as responders worked to suppress the blaze, which was brought under control in about 30 minutes.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause, with the Bridgeport Fire Marshal’s Office leading the probe. The airport, which sits on the border of Bridgeport and Stratford, continued operations without disruption.
The Civil Air Patrol building, used for training and administrative purposes, was unoccupied at the time of the fire.
Officials have not disclosed if foul play is suspected or if the structure had previous fire code violations.
By sunrise, only a skeleton of scorched beams remained. Investigators combed through debris, seeking clues to what sparked the inferno.
While no flights were affected, the incident raises questions about fire safety measures at the municipal airfield.
