June 6, 2024 – Disney+ will premiere “Star Wars: The Acolyte” on June 4, 2024, marking a significant addition to the Star Wars franchise. Set during the High Republic era, the series delves into a period approximately 500 years before the events of “The Phantom Menace,” offering fans a new perspective on the Jedi Order and the dark forces that threaten the galaxy.

The series follows a respected Jedi Master, played by Lee Jung-jae, and his former apprentice, portrayed by Amandla Stenberg, as they investigate a series of mysterious Jedi murders. The narrative promises to unravel dark secrets and introduce new elements to the Star Wars lore, blending a murder-mystery with the rich history of the High Republic era.

“Star Wars: The Acolyte” features a diverse cast, including:

  • Carrie-Anne Moss in an undisclosed role
  • Jodie Turner-Smith as Mother Aniseya, leader of a coven of witches
  • Charlie Barnett as Yord, a Jedi Knight
  • Joonas Suotamo as Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi

Behind the scenes, the show is helmed by Leslye Headland, co-creator of “Russian Doll,” who is a lifelong Star Wars fan. Her deep knowledge of the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU) ensures that the series will include nuanced elements that will appeal to long-time fans and newcomers alike.

The plot of “The Acolyte” centers on an investigation into a shocking crime spree that pits the Jedi Master against a dangerous warrior from his past. As they delve deeper, they uncover clues that lead them down a dark path where sinister forces are revealed, challenging their perceptions of good and evil within the Star Wars universe.

Leslye Headland has described the series as a blend of detective thriller and murder mystery, set against the backdrop of the High Republic era. This period, explored extensively in recent Star Wars literature, has been brought to life through novels, comics, and audio dramas. “The Acolyte” marks the first live-action exploration of this era, promising a fresh and intriguing storyline for viewers.

The show’s writing team includes notable talents such as Jason Micallef, Charmaine DeGrate, Eileen Shim, Jasmyne Flournoy, Claire Kiechel, Kor Adana, Cameron Squires, Jocelyn Bioh, and Jen Richards. This diverse group of writers brings a wealth of experience from various acclaimed shows, ensuring a high-quality narrative for “The Acolyte.”

Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, has expressed her confidence in Headland’s vision for the series, highlighting her extensive knowledge of Star Wars lore and her ability to weave together elements from the Expanded Universe into the new narrative.

The release of “Star Wars: The Acolyte” on June 4, 2024, is highly anticipated by fans worldwide. The series promises to expand the Star Wars universe by exploring a relatively uncharted period and introducing new characters and storylines. With its unique blend of mystery, thriller, and classic Star Wars elements, “The Acolyte” is set to be a standout addition to the franchise.
