Cromwell, CT — January 20, 2025

A tanker truck rollover on Route 9 in Cromwell early Monday morning resulted in the spill of hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel, sparking environmental concerns and causing significant traffic disruptions.

The incident occurred near Exit 19 and was captured on video, showing the truck flipping onto its side in what appeared to be a high-speed crash. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to manage the situation, with firefighters, environmental specialists, and hazardous material crews working to contain and clean up the spill.

Traffic Impact

Authorities temporarily closed Route 9’s southbound lanes to facilitate clean-up efforts and ensure safety for motorists. Commuters experienced delays as detours were established to redirect traffic away from the affected area. Police urged drivers to seek alternative routes and exercise caution as crews continued their work well into the afternoon.

Environmental Concerns

The spill, estimated to involve hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel, raised immediate environmental alarms. Clean-up teams focused on preventing the fuel from seeping into nearby waterways, including the Connecticut River, which runs close to the highway. Officials from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) were called in to assess the extent of potential environmental damage.

“Our teams are working alongside local responders to minimize environmental impact. Containment measures are in place to address any immediate risks to soil and water.”

DEEP spokesperson Maria Jacobs stated

Investigation Ongoing

As of this writing, the cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Cromwell Police Department and Connecticut State Police. Early reports suggest that speed and road conditions may have contributed to the rollover. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.

Safety and Precautions

Residents in the area are encouraged to monitor local news for updates on traffic conditions and ongoing remediation efforts. The affected lanes of Route 9 are expected to remain closed until late Monday evening as crews continue their work.

Local environmental advocates have called for renewed focus on safety protocols for vehicles carrying hazardous materials, emphasizing the importance of stricter regulations to prevent future incidents.

Stay tuned for updates as more details emerge about the Route 9 tanker truck rollover and its aftermath.
