Severe storms and tornadoes swept across the central United States over the Memorial Day weekend, leaving a path of destruction and at least 21 fatalities, including two children. The affected states include Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kentucky. The powerful storms not only claimed lives but also caused significant structural damage and widespread power outages.

The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that multiple tornadoes touched down between May 6 and May 10, 2024. On May 8 and 9 alone, several waves of severe thunderstorms, including numerous supercells, impacted Middle Tennessee and other regions. The storms produced high winds, large hail, and numerous tornadoes, prompting tornado emergencies in several areas.

In Michigan, the storms were particularly devastating. An EF-1 tornado with winds up to 110 mph struck Kent County, causing substantial damage. Another EF-0 tornado was reported in Wayne County’s Canton Township. The most tragic incident occurred when a vehicle hydroplaned and collided with another, resulting in the deaths of a 21-year-old woman and two young girls, ages 3 and 1. Additionally, one person died in Lansing after a tree fell on a home, and several other severe injuries were reported.

  • Confirmed Tornadoes: From May 6-10, there were 167 confirmed tornadoes, including 61 EF0, 79 EF1, 13 EF2, 3 EF3, and 1 EF4 tornadoes.
  • Fatalities and Injuries: The storms resulted in 21 deaths and numerous injuries across several states. In Tennessee, an EF-3 tornado caused 12 injuries and one fatality as it tore through Maury and Marshall Counties.
  • Power Outages: Over 160,000 customers in Kentucky experienced power outages. In Michigan, more than 460,000 customers were without power, while Ohio reported over 218,000 outages.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center to support affected communities. Emergency services have been working tirelessly to assess the damage, restore power, and assist those displaced by the storms. The National Weather Service continues to monitor the situation, providing updates and warnings as necessary.

The severe weather has left many communities in mourning and recovery. In addition to the loss of life, the destruction of homes and infrastructure has displaced numerous families. Emergency shelters have been set up, and aid organizations are on the ground providing necessary supplies and support. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but initial reports indicate that recovery efforts will take significant time and resources.
