Redshirt senior Paige Bueckers delivered a commanding performance with 23 points and 10 assists as No. 5 UConn (26-3, 16-0 BIG EAST) dismantled Butler (15-15, 5-12) in an 86-47 rout Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

Freshman sensation Sarah Strong further bolstered the Huskies with 16 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, leading a balanced offensive attack that saw five UConn players reach double figures.

The Bulldogs struggled to find footing against UConn’s defensive pressure, mustering only single digits in each of the first two quarters.

By halftime, the Huskies had seized a dominant 42-17 advantage.

Butler showed resilience in the third, outscoring UConn 25-22, but the Huskies extinguished any comeback hopes with a blistering 19-0 closing run in the fourth.

Butler’s historic first-ever sellout for a women’s basketball game saw 9,100 fans packed inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. The electric crowd, however, could do little to slow UConn’s relentless charge.

Bueckers, the engine behind UConn’s offensive mastery, orchestrated play with surgical precision, threading passes and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Her 10-assist outing marked another milestone in a resurgent season for the redshirt senior.

Meanwhile, Strong’s near double-double reaffirmed her growing influence within the Huskies’ rotation. The freshman’s versatility and poise continue to fuel UConn’s depth as March approaches.

The afternoon also marked the long-awaited return of redshirt junior Caroline Ducharme, who stepped onto the court in the final minutes for her first appearance since Nov. 19, 2023.

The Huskies now set their sights on No. 23 Creighton (22-4, 14-1), whom they will face Thursday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in their final XL Center game of the season. Fewer than 150 tickets remain, setting the stage for a charged atmosphere.

UConn wasted no time asserting control, suffocating Butler’s offense and forcing errant shots. The Bulldogs struggled to penetrate the Huskies’ defensive schemes, managing just eight points in the opening quarter and nine in the second.

At the other end, Strong and Bueckers spearheaded an offensive symphony. Bueckers facilitated with precision, seamlessly weaving through Butler’s defensive gaps. Strong’s presence in the paint and beyond added a dimension that proved uncontainable.

By intermission, the Huskies had converted their defensive stranglehold into a commanding 25-point cushion. Butler, unable to crack UConn’s rotations, faced an uphill battle against the top-ranked BIG EAST powerhouse.

The Bulldogs found a brief rhythm after the break, capitalizing on UConn’s momentary lapse in defensive intensity. Butler outpaced the Huskies 25-22 in the third quarter, a stretch that provided the home crowd with flashes of encouragement.

Yet any optimism was short-lived. UConn responded with a final frame of defensive intensity and ruthless efficiency. The Huskies unleashed a game-ending 19-0 run, leaving Butler scoreless for the final stretch and sealing the outcome in emphatic fashion.

Five UConn players posted double-digit scoring, reinforcing the team’s multidimensional attack.

Beyond Bueckers and Strong, the Huskies’ offensive contributions remained steady across the board, an ominous sign for opponents eyeing a postseason upset bid.

Ducharme’s brief but significant return also adds another layer to UConn’s postseason aspirations. Having been sidelined for months, her reintegration into the rotation could provide the Huskies with an additional scoring and defensive option.
