Authorities identified the suspect as John Irizary of Waterbury.

Police said Irizary and the victim were in a relationship and share a 22-year-old son, who was home at the time of the incident and called 911 after hearing gunfire. The son was not injured.

Irizary was arrested on scene and has been charged with first-degree assault, criminal attempt at murder, tampering with evidence, illegal discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, and additional related offenses.

Police confirmed a firearm was recovered at the residence.

The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.

Irizary is currently held on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court on Friday.
