WATERBURY, CT — A 14-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after being struck by a motorcycle in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday evening in Waterbury.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Grove Street and Cooke Street.

Police said the teen was riding an electric scooter and crossing the street when he was hit. Responding officers found him lying in the roadway. He was transported to the hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The motorcyclist fled the scene. No arrests had been made as of Thursday morning.

“It’s pretty horrible, I can’t believe it. My first reaction is I hope he’s alright. That’s crazy,” said Phil Mazzone, a resident of Waterbury.

Neighbors described growing concerns about road safety in the area.

One woman, who said her four daughters ride electric scooters, now fears letting them back outside. “I don’t think they’ll be riding anymore for a while. I don’t feel safe,” she said.

The same woman raised concerns about unregistered vehicles and reckless driving near the intersection. “I believe it’s unregistered vehicles, undocumented drivers, suspended drivers, drugs, alcohol, all different things… They’re not slowing down on this corner. I don’t know if they should put police officers. The community should come out and talk about this more,” she added.

Waterbury police have asked anyone with information to contact the department’s Crash Reconstruction Unit.

No further details about the motorcyclist or the vehicle involved have been released.
