Waterbury, CT — Walgreens will shut down its store at 11 Meriden Road in Waterbury on April 22, the company said, as part of a plan to shutter 1,200 locations over the next three years.

Customers with active prescriptions at the Meriden Road store will receive notifications by mail. Their prescriptions will be automatically transferred to the nearest Walgreens at 649 W. Main St. in Waterbury.

The company said patients at both locations are eligible for 90 days of free prescription delivery and advised them to consult their pharmacist to enroll in the service.

“Our retail pharmacy business is central to our go-forward business strategy. However, increased regulatory and reimbursement pressures are weighing on our ability to cover the costs associated with rent, staffing, and supply needs,” Walgreens said in a statement. “It is never an easy decision to close a store.”

Walgreens cited financial strain and market conditions as reasons for its ongoing closures.

“We know that our stores are important to the communities that we serve, and therefore do everything possible to improve the store performance,” the company said. “When closures are necessary, like the one in Waterbury, we will work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions. We intend to redeploy the majority of our team members from those stores that we close.”

The Waterbury closure is the latest in a series of store shutdowns in Connecticut.

Walgreens previously announced the closure of its Hartford location at 161 Washington St. on March 18 and another at 436 Whalley Ave. in New Haven on March 20.

Walgreens, one of the largest pharmacy chains in the U.S., has been under mounting financial pressure amid changing industry regulations and rising costs.
