Hartford, CT — Governor Ned Lamont has ordered all U.S. and state flags in Connecticut to be flown at half-staff following the death of Pope Francis, in accordance with a federal proclamation issued by President Donald Trump.
The directive applies immediately and will remain in effect until sunset on the day of the Pope’s interment. That date has not yet been determined.
“Leading by his words and his example, Pope Francis was one of the most inspiring popes and spiritual leaders of my lifetime, at a time when we needed him most,” Governor Lamont said. “He brought people together, teaching mercy, compassion, and reconciliation. I join Catholics across the world in mourning his passing.”
Flags are to be lowered at all state buildings, including the Connecticut State Capitol, as well as state-operated facilities and grounds.
The governor’s office encouraged individuals, businesses, municipalities, schools, and other entities across Connecticut to lower their flags in tandem. According to protocol, no flag is to be flown higher than the U.S. flag, meaning all flags—municipal, state, corporate, or otherwise—must also be lowered.
The Office of Governor Lamont will provide a follow-up notice once the interment date is announced, indicating when flags should return to full-staff.
