Norwalk Beaches Reopen: Calf Pasture, Shady Beach Safe Again

NORWALK, CT — Calf Pasture Beach and Shady Beach in Norwalk have officially reopened after elevated bacteria levels forced a temporary closure earlier this week. The popular Norwalk beaches reopen just in time for Memorial Day weekend, following updated water tests that confirmed safe conditions for swimming and beach activities.

The Norwalk Health Department closed both Calf Pasture Beach and Shady Beach on Thursday after routine monitoring detected high levels of Enterococci bacteria, signaling possible fecal contamination. These closures sparked disappointment among locals, as the beaches are major draws for residents and tourists alike, especially during holiday weekends.

According to city officials, the latest water quality tests conducted Saturday afternoon showed bacteria levels had dropped to safe thresholds, allowing the Norwalk beaches to reopen with no restrictions. “Our team works diligently to monitor beach conditions to ensure public safety,” said Norwalk Health Director Deanna D’Amore. “We encourage all visitors to check the city’s online beach advisory before heading out.”

Calf Pasture Beach, which recently earned an A+ rating from the nonprofit Save the Sound for its excellent water quality, offers scenic views, picnic areas, volleyball courts, and playgrounds. Shady Beach, located adjacent to Calf Pasture, is a quieter spot favored by families and nature lovers.

The City of Norwalk advises beachgoers to visit the official website or call the beach hotline at 203-854-7921 for up-to-date information on water quality and beach conditions. Beach hours are 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

With sunny weather in the forecast, the reopening of Calf Pasture Beach and Shady Beach is expected to draw large crowds eager to enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and recreational activities. The city reminds visitors to follow posted guidelines and respect the natural environment to keep Norwalk’s beaches clean and safe for everyone.
