As the new year unfolds, understanding the Social Security payment schedule is crucial for beneficiaries planning their finances. The Social Security Administration (SSA) disburses payments on specific dates, depending on various factors, including the recipient’s birth date and the type of benefits received.

The Social Security Administration sends regular monthly payments to beneficiaries, but the exact date varies. For Social Security retirement, disability, and survivor (RSDI) beneficiaries who filed claims after May 1, 1997, payments are scheduled on either the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month, based on the beneficiary’s birth date.

  • Birth date 1st-10th: Payments on the second Wednesday of each month.
  • Birth date 11th-20th: Payments on the third Wednesday of each month.
  • Birth date 21st-31st: Payments on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

For those who began receiving benefits before May 1997, payments are made on the third of each month. Additionally, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, who are typically individuals with disabilities or older adults with limited income, receive payments on the first of each month. If the first falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are issued on the preceding weekday.

January 2025 Payment Schedule:

  • SSA beneficiaries before May 1997: Jan. 3
  • Birth date 1st-10th: Jan. 8
  • Birth date 11th-20th: Jan. 15
  • Birth date 21st-31st: Jan. 22
  • SSI recipients: Dec. 31 (due to New Year’s Day holiday)

Reporting Missing Payments:

If a payment is not received on the expected date, beneficiaries should first contact their bank or financial institution to check for any delays. If the issue persists, they should reach out to the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit their local Social Security office. The SSA assures that they will review the case and replace the payment if it is due.

Understanding the Social Security payment schedule is essential for beneficiaries to manage their finances effectively. By knowing when to expect payments and how to address any issues, recipients can ensure they receive their benefits on time.
