TRUMBULL, CT — A state-led investigation is underway in Trumbull Center after reports of asbestos contamination at a private construction site triggered public health concerns, town officials confirmed Friday.

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the state Department of Public Health (DPH) are overseeing the investigation, which centers on asbestos materials identified in fill used at the site.

DEEP inspectors found asbestos-containing adhesives and glues in the material, but no friable or airborne-prone substances, according to the town.

Officials said that the property owner is cooperating fully and will cover the cost of remediation.

Cleanup operations are being coordinated by DEEP and DPH in consultation with the owner.

“The incident is unfortunate and upsetting,” the Town of Trumbull said in a public statement.

“While it does not appear at this time that any significant public health concerns are present, the mere mention of such contaminants can be very unsettling for businesses, employees, residents and visitors to the area.”

DEEP has not yet released a detailed timeline or full findings and indicated that the investigation remains ongoing.

In response to community concerns, the town has requested that DEEP provide regular briefings to residents and businesses near the site.

No evacuation orders have been issued, and officials reiterated that early findings do not indicate airborne health hazards.
