TRUMBULL, CT — A Norwalk man charged, and has been arrested with murder after allegedly attacking and killing a 70-year-old woman outside a residential complex in Trumbull on Monday.
Ylli Shtopaku, 51, of Norwalk, was formally charged with murder following the death of Lida Shape, 70, who was found critically injured outside the Ten-Trumbull apartment complex on Oakview Drive. Trumbull Police reported that Shtopaku used a baseball bat in the violent assault, which took place in broad daylight.
Emergency responders transported Shape to St. Vincent’s Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Shtopaku was apprehended on the scene and taken into custody without incident.
According to investigators, the motive behind the attack remains unclear, and authorities have not confirmed any known relationship between the suspect and the victim. Shtopaku is currently being held on a $1 million bond and is scheduled for arraignment at Bridgeport Superior Court later this week.
“This was a brutal and senseless act of violence that has deeply shaken our community,” … We are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and are urging anyone with information to come forward.”
Trumbull Police Chief Michael Lombardo said in a press statement.
Neighbors in the area described the incident as deeply disturbing. Some recalled seeing emergency vehicles swarm the normally quiet residential complex around midday.
The tragic death of Lida Shape has prompted an outpouring of grief in Trumbull and a renewed focus on community safety. As the investigation continues, authorities are expected to release additional details in the coming days.
