HARTFORD, CT — The “catch and keep” trout season is underway in Connecticut, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has already stocked over 20,000 trout this week across lakes, rivers, and ponds statewide.
With a second wave of stocking in progress and favorable weather ahead, anglers are hitting the water in strong numbers.
DEEP reminds anglers to follow local regulations, as fishing rules vary by waterbody. While many enjoy keeping their catch, others continue to practice catch and release.
Trout fishing in Connecticut requires a Trout & Salmon Stamp only under certain conditions.
A stamp is necessary if fishing in Trout Management Areas, Trout Parks, Wild Trout Management Areas, or Atlantic Salmon Management Areas—or if planning to harvest trout, kokanee, or Atlantic salmon from any body of water.
DEEP encourages all anglers to purchase a stamp regardless, as the funds directly support the state’s hatchery operations.
This week’s stocked sites include Amos Lake in Preston, Bashan Lake in East Haddam, Black Pond in Middlefield and Meriden, the Farm River in East Haven and North Branford, and the Shepaug River in Roxbury, among others.
Dozens of community ponds and trout parks received fresh fish in time for the spring rush.
Environmental Conservation Police continue to enforce poaching violations and ask the public to report illegal fishing activity by calling 860-424-3333.
