In an electrifying performance at the 2025 NBA Slam Dunk Contest, former men’s UConn basketball standout and current San Antonio Spurs rookie Stephon Castle finished as the runner-up in one of the most thrilling dunk competitions in recent years. The event, held during NBA All-Star Weekend, saw Castle deliver a series of spectacular dunks, captivating the crowd and the judges alike.
Castle’s final round performance earned him a near-perfect total score of 99.6, highlighted by a flawless 50 on his second attempt. However, he narrowly fell short against Orlando Magic’s Mac McClung, who secured his third consecutive Slam Dunk Contest title with perfect 50s across all his dunks. McClung’s historic victory cemented his place in dunk contest history, but Castle’s performance ensured he left a lasting impression on the basketball world.
Also representing UConn in the competition was Milwaukee Bucks rookie Andre Jackson Jr., who showcased his athleticism but did not advance past the first round. Despite not claiming the title, Castle’s dunk contest performance was only part of a stellar All-Star Weekend showing. He was later named MVP of the Rising Stars game after leading his team to victory with a clutch three-pointer in the closing seconds.
Reflecting on his experience, Castle expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent UConn and Connecticut on the national stage. “It’s an honor to showcase the talent and hard work that UConn instilled in me,” Castle said in a post-event interview. “I wanted to bring excitement to the fans and put on a show. Hopefully, I’ll get another shot at the title next year.”
Castle’s rookie NBA season with the Spurs has been impressive so far, as he averages 12.9 points per game and continues to make an impact on both ends of the floor. His high-flying dunks and all-around play have made him a key contributor to San Antonio’s rebuild and a fan favorite.
While he may not have taken home the dunk contest trophy, Castle’s performance reaffirmed his status as one of the league’s most exciting young players. Connecticut basketball fans have plenty to be proud of as their former Huskies star continues to rise in the NBA.
