Hartford, CT – A Hartford man was arrested Monday night after state troopers say he drove the wrong way on I-84, struck a vehicle, hit a guardrail, and attempted to flee the scene on foot before being tracked by a police K9.
At 8:47 p.m. on March 31, Troop H-Hartford received an alert that a Nissan Murano SUV had entered I-84 westbound via exit 47, traveling east in the westbound lanes.
Before troopers could intercept the vehicle, it sideswiped another car on the ramp, continued wrong-way through all travel lanes, and eventually collided with the median guardrail, coming to a stop while straddling the metal barrier.
The driver exited the disabled vehicle and ran, authorities said. Troopers soon found him on the Capitol Avenue on-ramp, where he was “severely unsteady on his feet” and had to be physically held upright to prevent him from falling, according to the report.
The suspect was identified as Imer Danilo Hernandez, 21, of Hartford.
Police said Hernandez exhibited signs of intoxication. Field sobriety tests at Troop H confirmed impairment. The vehicle was uninsured, and Hernandez did not hold a valid license.
A Hartford Police K9 tracked from the Murano to Hernandez’s location, confirming his involvement.
Hernandez was charged with multiple offenses, including Driving the Wrong Way on a Divided Highway (C.G.S. 14-237), Operating Under the Influence (C.G.S. 14-227a), Reckless Driving (C.G.S. 14-222), Evading Responsibility (C.G.S. 14-224(b)(3)), Operating Without Insurance (C.G.S. 14-213b), and Resisting Arrest (C.G.S. 53a-167a).
He was held on a $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on April 1, 2025. No injuries were reported.
