NEW HAVEN, CT — New Haven United FC isn’t just building a team—it’s building access.
“Passion for the game, purpose for the city.” That’s the guiding principle of New Haven’s new semi-pro soccer team, according to owner Jason Price, who said the club will run free clinics and youth programs to challenge the pay-to-play system.
“So, there are families who have talented kids who love it but have no financial means really to participate at the highest level,” Price said. “What I love is reaching out in the community, finding those kids, and eliminating those financial barriers.”
The team includes college and professional players from 14 countries. Among them is Facundo Talin, a Central Connecticut State alum who played internationally for 20 years.
“Being here again for me is amazing,” Talin said.
Hofstra’s Aleksei Arames said the summer league gives him “a good representation of what the next level might have.”
New Haven United hosts its first home match Wednesday, May 14, 7 p.m., at Yale’s Reese Stadium against Hartford City FC.
“My hope is that a lot of people get excited for the first game coming up,” said Mayor Justin Elicker, “and that we are going to get a lot of people to support our hometown team.”
