Over 60 Ice Cream Products Recalled Due to Listeria Risk

On June 26, 2024, a significant recall was announced affecting over 60 ice cream products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This recall includes products from brands such as Real Kosher Ice Cream and Wilcox Ice Cream. The issue was discovered after routine testing identified the presence of Listeria, a bacteria that can cause severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that leads to symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal distress. In severe cases, the infection can spread to the nervous system, leading to headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women are at particular risk, as listeriosis can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.
