HARTFORD, CT — Gov. Ned Lamont has ordered all U.S. and Connecticut flags to fly at half-staff on Thursday, May 15, 2025, from sunrise to sunset.
The directive is in observance of Peace Officers Memorial Day, a national day honoring law enforcement officers who died while on duty.
The order covers all state buildings, the Capitol, and public grounds, and calls on towns, schools, businesses, and private properties to do the same. The instruction follows federal flag rules, which state that no other flag can fly higher than the U.S. flag. Any flag flown alongside must also be lowered or taken down.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is recognized by the U.S. government under 36 U.S. Code § 136. It was first declared in 1962 through Presidential Proclamation 3537 and is part of National Police Week.
The date is set aside each year to remember officers across the country who lost their lives while serving the public. Connecticut’s order follows national guidelines and reflects the state’s participation in this annual tribute.
State Agencies and Public Asked to Comply
All state departments were told to lower flags without delay. The Governor’s Office also asked local governments, private flagholders, and institutions to join the observance for the same time period.
The state reminded participants that flags unable to be lowered should be removed for the day. The order serves as a public sign of respect and remembrance for officers who died while protecting others.
