PORTLAND, CT — A devastating Portland house fire on Meshomasic Trail on Monday afternoon resulted in the total loss of a home and the tragic death of two family pets, according to the Portland Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to reports of a burning woodpile adjacent to the house around 1:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they encountered a rapidly advancing blaze at the rear of the residence. The fire quickly engulfed the structure, necessitating additional water tankers due to the rural location’s lack of city water supply.
Multiple neighboring departments, including those from Middletown, Glastonbury, East Hampton, East Haddam, Middlefield, Haddam, and Marlborough, assisted in combating the fire. Fire crews remained on the scene into the evening to extinguish hotspots. Fortunately, no human injuries were reported.
The Portland Fire Department expressed gratitude for the mutual aid received.
“While the home was a total loss and this is a very devastating fire for our community, we are grateful that no one was hurt in the fire.”
The Portland Fire Department stated.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
