Shafiqua Maloney Advances to Women’s 800m Final at Paris 2024 Olympics

Shafiqua Maloney, representing St. Vincent and the Grenadines, has made history by qualifying for the women’s 800m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. This accomplishment marks the first time an athlete from her country has reached the final in this event, showcasing her exceptional talent and determination.

Maloney, who has openly shared her struggles with homelessness and financial instability, has defied the odds to secure her spot in the women 800 meter final.

“I’ve been homeless—not having food to eat and all this stuff. God carried me through all of that.”

In the semifinals held earlier today, Maloney clocked an impressive time of 1:57.59, finishing second in her heat. Duguma of Ethiopia, who led the race with a time of 1:57.47.

The final of the women’s 800m is scheduled for tomorrow August 5 2024 at 3:47 PM Eastern Time. Maloney will be competing against a formidable field, including J. Whittaker of the United States, W. Mesele of Ethiopia, and K. Hodgkinson of Great Britain, among others. The competition is expected to be fierce, but Maloney’s recent performances indicate that she is a strong contender.

“I’m just thankful to be here and know that in my country back home, all the people have been supporting me. I think the country played a big part.”
