STORRS, CT — UConn sophomore Alex Heard is headed to the 2025 NCAA Men’s Golf Regional in Amherst, Virginia, following a career-best performance at the BIG EAST Championship, where he claimed the individual title.
Heard will compete as one of 10 individual qualifiers in the Amherst Regional, scheduled for May 12–14 at Poplar Grove Golf Club.
He punched his ticket to the NCAA field after posting 205 (71-66-68) at the conference tournament, finishing all three rounds under par. The 66 in his second round marked a new career low.
Heard becomes the third UConn player to win individual medalist honors at the BIG EAST Championship, joining Caleb Manuel (2022) and Brian Ahern (1994).
Heard enters the postseason as UConn’s top scorer, with a 71.4 scoring average this season. He has posted 16 rounds of par or better out of 25 total and finished in the top 10 three times this spring.
The NCAA announced its full regional field Wednesday. Each of the six regionals will host either 13 or 14 teams, along with additional individuals not on those teams.
Amherst’s regional will include 14 teams and 10 individual qualifiers, with LSU as the top seed.
Other teams in the field include Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine, Tennessee, Arizona, Stanford, Wake Forest, Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast, Kent State, Princeton, and Howard.
Heard will join a competitive individual group that includes Andrew Swanson (Clemson), Kaleb Wilson (West Virginia), Ike Joy (Liberty), Emil Riegger (Maryland), Peicheng Chen (St. John’s), Sakke Siltala (Texas State), Henric Bjelke (Campbell), Colin Dutton (UNCG), and Nolan Schuermann.
The top five teams and lowest-scoring individual not on an advancing team from each regional will qualify for the NCAA Finals, to be held May 23–28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
