HARTFORD, CT — The XL Center renovation officially began on May 20, 2025, as the iconic downtown Hartford arena closed its doors to undergo a transformative $138 million upgrade. This ambitious project, backed by $118 million in state funding and an additional $20 million from Oak View Group (OVG), aims to revitalize the aging sports and entertainment hub, ensuring its viability for decades to come.
The XL Center, formerly known as the Hartford Civic Center, has served as a cornerstone of Connecticut’s entertainment scene since 1975. Despite its rich history — including hosting the NHL’s Hartford Whalers — the facility has lagged behind modern standards. Michael Freimuth, Executive Director of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), described the venue as “our troubled child of all the properties we manage,” underscoring the need for comprehensive improvements.
Renovation plans include a full reconstruction of the lower bowl, installation of “bunker” suites with direct arena access, upgraded locker rooms for the UConn Huskies, and new commercial kitchens to enhance food service. These upgrades are designed to extend the facility’s life by 15 to 20 years and significantly increase its capacity to host major concerts and sporting events.
Freimuth added that building a new arena today would cost over a billion dollars, making the XL Center renovation the more feasible and economically sensible path forward. Once complete, the renovated arena aims to host up to 30 concerts annually — a significant boost from current figures.
Though some critics question the use of public funds, supporters argue the project will fuel economic growth in Hartford and attract new entertainment opportunities statewide. Construction is expected to conclude by fall 2025.
