West Hartford, CT – When disaster strikes, preparedness can mean the difference between chaos and coordinated response.

In a bid to bolster community resilience, the Town of West Hartford is expanding its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program is now offering specialized training opportunities.

The upcoming CERT Basic Training is scheduled from April 2 to April 30. It will provide participants with a 20-hour standardized course covering disaster response, first aid, and shelter management.

Additionally, volunteers will complete an online FEMA module to further strengthen their readiness.

Moreover, in a groundbreaking move, West Hartford is also launching its first Spanish-language CERT training. Set for March 1 and March 8, 2025, at the Elmwood Community Center, the program will be taught by emergency personnel from the fire, social services, and police departments.

According to officials, the initiative aims to bridge language barriers and ensure broader community participation in emergency preparedness efforts.

Beyond training, CERT members are vital assets in emergency sheltering, damage assessments, and logistical support during crises.

However, to maintain order, volunteers must follow strict activation protocols—deploying only under official orders and adhering to a rigorous Code of Conduct to ensure professionalism and public trust.

With applications for the Spanish-language CERT course closing on February 26, officials encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity to strengthen community resilience.

For more information, email CERT@WestHartfordCT.gov or call CERT Coordinator Robert McCue at 860-561-8310.
